Campus Black ForumCampus Black Forum returns for Fall 09! Dr. Cathy Thompson will facilitate this open forum for students, faculty, and staff. Forum description: An informal gathering where students, faculty, and staff of African descent, and community members of San Diego come together to discuss experiences and issues dealing with the African American community; seeking to empower, encourage, and bring about greater awareness and positive change on college campuses and in the African American communities of San Diego. NDSD 2009Not sure how you're feeling these days? Come to the 2009 National Depression Screening Day event on Thursday, October 8, 2009, from 10am-2pm, Library Walk. You can complete a brief survey and get immediate feedback with a CAPS counselor on your results. You can also stop by for more information on depresson, CAPS services, and other programs. Fall 2009: Asian American Community Forum Returns!

Asian Community ForumBack by popular demand! The Asian American Community Forum will kick off on Thursday, October 15, 2009 from 3:00-4:00 at the Cross Cultural Center's Library Room! Come and discuss with others experiences and issues related to being an Asian American at UCSD. The atmosphere is casual and light. No appointment necessary - just drop in! Goals in Action WorkshopThe Goals in Action workshop will start up again for the Fall quarter. Dr. Courtney Peraza head up this popular workshop. Here's the info:

Focus:  Goal setting, time management, accessing resources on campus, self-care and the promotion of healthy behaviors.

Fall 2009: Drop-in for some Peace of Mind ....

Peace of Mind WorkshopThe popular Peace of Mind workshops will be returning for another quarter. This workshop is drop-in (no appointment required). The Peace of Mind Workshop is a weekly educational workshop for students who want to increase their life skills and their ability to cope with emotions, relationships, conflict and stress. Through the Peace of Mind Workshops, you can learn how to live in the moment, manage your emotions, increase interpersonal skillfulness and identify what is really important to your life.  The series includes 6 workshops, covering 4 themes:  mindfulness, emotional wisdom, interpersonal effectiveness, and stress tolerance. Each workshop provides an informational overview, handouts and a relaxation exercise. The Spring 09 schedule includes:

Mindfulness:
- Learn “what” to do to increase awareness and decrease impulsive or moody behaviors. Monday, Oct 19, 12:30-1:30

- Learn “how” to focus your attention to increase awareness and decrease suffering. Monday, Oct 26, 12:30-1:30

Interpersonal Skills:
- Learn to cope with conflict, ask for what you need or want and say “no”. Monday, Nov 2, 12:30-1:30

Emotional Wisdom:
- Learn to understand emotions and improve skills for coping with feelings. Monday, Nov 9, 12:30-1:30

- Learn to decrease vulnerability to painful emotions and boost positive emotions. Monday, Nov 16, 12:30-1:30

Stress Tolerance:
- Learn relaxation skills and effective behaviors to handle stress or a crisis. Monday, Nov 23, 12:30-1:30

- Learn breathing techniques, self-soothing skills, and tips for surviving finals. Monday, Nov 30, 12:30-1:30

Fall 2009: Out of Darkness Community Walk scheduled for Oct 17, 2009

Out of Darkness Community WalkCAPS will once again participate in the Out of Darkness Community Walk. The walk is organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and works to increase awareness and education on suicide prevention. By walking in the Out of the Darkness Community Walks to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), you will be walking with thousands of people nationwide to raise money for AFSP's vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increase national awareness about depression and suicide, and assist survivors of suicide loss. The Community Walk, open to anyone, will be held on October 17, 2009 at de Anza Cove, Mission Bay, at 10am. For more info, contact Dr. John Sexton at 858-534-3755.

4/2009 - Resources for those concerned about the 2009 H1N1 infection (swine flu):

Flu ResourcesCounseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is available to help students and families with concerns about the recent news of 2009 H1N1 infections. Faculty/Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) is available for UCSD faculty/staff who need support or consultation regarding this situation. Below is a link to both campus and national websites with information about the flu.

For students in need of immediate assistance, please call 858-534-3755 or visit our Central Office at Galbraith Hall 190 (below CLICS) from 8:00am-4:30pm to speak with a on-call resource psychologist. For non-business hours, if immediate assistance is needed, please call 858-534-3755 and ask to speak with the on-call psychological counselor. After-Hours Crisis CounselingDuring holidays and non-business hours, students who need immediate crisis counseling can call (858) 534-3755 to speak immediately with a mental health counselor. During normal work hours, students can call the number above to speak with the urgent care mental health professional and set up a meeting, if necessary. Alcohol and Substance Support ForumBack by popular demand! Starting April 9 (Week 2), CAPS is offering once again the Alcohol & Substance Support Forum to UCSD students. Students who want to talk or explore their alcohol and substance use can come to this confidential, drop-in meeting in the Spring 09 quarter. No appointment necessary. Biofeedback GroupLooking for balance within a busy schedule? CAPS and the Wellness Peer Educators are offering the Stress Management thru biofeedback and mindfulness group! What is biofeedback? BIOFEEDBACK uses modern technology to give us “in the moment” information about what’s happening in our bodies. CAPS is proud to co-sponsor "Celebrating Every Body." This art exhibition is a collection of work by innovative UCSD Master of Fine Arts students and an intriguing local artist that provides the viewer with a variety of perspectives regarding human beauty, body preoccupation, and body image. Featured artists include: Shane Anderson, Crystal Z. Campbell, Dolissa Medina, Jesse Mockrin, Lesha Maria Rodriguez, and Rebecca Webb.

The opening reception is on Tuesday, March 3, from 4:30-6:00pm. The exhibit, which is part of our Eating Disorders Awareness Week program, will run from March 3-29 at The Loft. To download a poster, click here!

UNIDAS!1/09 MLK Day of Service: Training Program assists New Orleans flood victims.

While attending the 2009 National Multicultural Conference and Summit, our training program volunteered to assist New Orleans flood victims. In line with the theme of social justice at this year's conference, our interns teamed up with Xavier, Tulane, Dillard, and Loyola universities to assist Beacon of Hope, a New Orleans organization that assists families affected by the floods to return home. The four universities organized volunteer projects for over 500 volunteers!





UNIDAS!1/09 Join the 'Free To Be Me' Support Group! Now taking students for Winter 09!

CAPS is again offering the popular "Free To Be Me" Support Group this quarter. Free To Be Me is a weekly support group that will help you develop an active and satisfying relationship with your body and with the food you eat.  We will also help you to identify and manage triggers for binge eating and purging. This 7 session skill building and educational workshop will meet Thursdays @ 12:30-1:30pm. The workshop begins on January 29th and continues to meet weekly through March 12th. Sexuality Group for Winter 0911/14/08 - New Sexuality Group for Winter 08 being offered!

Starting this winter quarter a Sexuality therapy group is being offered at CAPS central office!  One of our new interns, Jocelyn Markowicz will be facilitating the group and is looking for undergraduate and graduate students who are would like to increase their self-awareness and comfort with all aspects of their sexuality.  Interested students should schedule a screening with Jocelyn by contacting her by telephone (858-532-5345) or by email. NDSD Success10/9/08 - CAPS sets new record at NDSD 2008!

The Peer Education Program has done it again! A new record was set when over 300 students completed surveys to assess their mental health at National Depression Screening Day. Out of Darkeness Walk10/9/08 - Out of the Darkness Walk a big success

Our annual participation at the Out of Darkness Walk was held on October 18 at San Diego’s Mission Bay. CAPS, along with the SOM and other UCSD departments, walked to raise money and awareness for suicide prevention. A great CAPS turnout contributed to the important walk. Great job team!









AIDS Walk 20089/28/08 - Training Program at AIDS Walk 2008

As part of our commitment to social justice, our predoctoral interns and others from our staff volunteered at AIDS Walk 2008. The interns cheered on runners and walkers who were committed to raising money to find a cure for AIDS. Social justice and advocacy work are major themes of our training program. Thank you interns! Going Green!10/1/08 - We've gone GREEN!

That's right ... CAPS has gone green! On July 1, CAPS transitioned to paperless forms! Students can now complete their counseling forms online through a secure website. We (and the trees we save) thank you for your patience during this transition. :)










CAPS Logo10/1/08 - CAPS unveils new logo and website

After receiving and integrating student, staff, and faculty feedback, CAPS is proud to unveil its new logo and webpage! This webpage includes many interactive components to allow for easier access to information and dowloads. In addition to changing ‘feel’ and ‘look’ of our site, our primary goal was to have users not scroll down for important information on our homepage. Thank you all for your feedback in the development of the new site. We would also like to thank Thomas Evan Lecklider, a graduate of Muir College, for donating his time to assist with the design and function of the website.
