What is Wellness?




What is "Wellness?"

Wellness is the conscious development of the "whole" self.  A journey for wellness is a process of searching, finding, and applying skills and experiences that contribute to one feeling healthy, balanced and fulfilled.  It is the effective integration of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that contribute to this sense of balance - and it is an ongoing journey to find different ways to cultivate this growth and development.  There are many dimensions of wellness:

  • Spiritual
  • Emotional
  • Intellectual
  • Physical
  • Cultural
  • Occupational
  • Social
  • Environmental

The Wellness Center at UCSD works with CAPS to address these various dimensions of wellness in assisting students in their personal journeys of peace and balance.  Through our Stress Management Clinic, Wellness Groups, and Outreach Programs, we strive to incorporate all the elements necessary to begin and maintain the journey:  holism, balance, self-responsibility, and positive and proactive thoughts and actions.

 

What types of wellness services are available to students?

CAPS and the UCSD Wellness Center offers numerous wellness services to students:  the Stress Management Groups, Wellness Groups, and outreach programs to assist students in their efforts to establish the 3 words that are present on our homepage: growth, strength, and harmony.

 

What are the Stress Management Groups?

The Stress Management Groups at CAPS are comprised of a series of groups and workshops designed to help you:

  • Reduce excessive worry and anxiety

  • Decrease bodily symptoms of stress and tension

  • Learn specific and practical coping strategies

  • Promote inner peace and contentment

  • Strengthen social skills and self-confidence

  • Improve academic and work achievement

  • Enhance physical well-being and athletic performance

  • Increase body awareness and enhance daily functioning

Our Stress Management Groups are able to meet these goals by providing multiple workshops, programs, and groups with the primary theme being to reduce stress, and increase wellness.  Groups offered through the Stress Management Clinic range from two-session workshops to groups that meet weekly.  Some groups begin throughout the quarter, while others start at the beginning of the quarter.  Please refer to our Groups section for more information.
