Sport Psychology and Outreach Response Team

CAPS and UCSD Athletics have partnered to develop a comprehensive model of service delivery to Scholar Athletes (SA) and the Athletic department. Following the guidelines set forth by the NCAA Mental Health Best Practices, this partnership has developed the CAPS SPORT Model (Sport Psychology and Outreach Response Team). This model includes clinical services, crisis response, consultation, mental health screenings, drop-in mentoring, trainings, and opportunties for the SA and department to flourish in their mental and emotional wel-being.  Please return to this page soon for more updated information.

Services for Scholar Athletes

CAPS and the SPORT Team have developed specialized services for our scholar athletes. In additional services offered to all UC San Diego students,  scholar athletes are offered additional appointment types to reduce barriers to accessing services. The following counseling services are available to scholar athletes:

CAPS Provides specialized initial phone assessments to identify scholar athletes needs and provide appropriate treamtment plans. This may mean scheduling a follow-up Initial Evaluation, a referral to outside providers, connecting with campus resources. See instructions below on how to request a SPORT BTA.

Instructions:

  • Call 858-534-3755 and indicate you are a scholar athlete and you would like a SPORT appointment
  • e.g., "I'm an athlete and I would like a SPORT appointment."
  • The scheduler will then make a SPORT appointment for you.
  • Please follow appointment checkin instructions provided by the scheduler.

If after your SPORT BTA you were recommended to schedule an initial evaluation (IE), CAPS has dedicated/reserved IEs specifically for scholar athletes.

Instructions:

  • Your SPORT BTA provider will assist you in scheduling a SPORT IT. They may direct you to call 858-534-3755 and indicate you are a scholar athlete and that you were referred for a SPORT Initial Evaluation.
  • Please follow appointment checkin instructions provided by the BTA provider or scheduler.

Emerging Leaders Workshop

The goal of the Leadership Training Workshop series is to facilitate the development of our student-athletes’ leadership skills, in hopes to promote strong, effective leaders and success for each UC San Diego Intercollegiate Athletics Team. Following the general outline of Jeff Janssen’s The Team Captain’s Leadership Manual, the workshop highlights peak performance and mental training techniques, learning and use of effective and healthy communication, strategies to increase team cohesion and connection, and minimization/management of conflict.

Let's Talk

Informal support with issues relevant to scholar-athletes, such as stress/worry, sleep, motivation, focus, recovering from setbacks, work/life changes, performance, and relationships (personal and professional). Let’s Talk sessions are designed to provide practical strategies, information, and support regarding general wellness-related issues. You can sign up for your individual meeting through instructions provided by your team page or sports administrator.
